Local tournament anglers Brian and Mary Brown finish in 4th place at the recent Fishers of Men Midwest regional tournament September 19-20 at the Detroit River in Trenton, MI. Enjoying two beautiful days of weather during practice the pair found a couple small rock piles on Lake Erie along with a point in the mouth of the river entering the lake where Mary caught the biggest smallmouth she has ever boated a 21'' toad. Other than Mary's big fish practice didn't yield many big bites but enough bites to get an idea as what to do for the next two tournament days. Day 1 found the pair on the point in the river with 5 other boats. With everyone catching only one or two fish the pair left after a couple of hours. Stopping on one of the rock piles they found in practice they put 4 quick fish in the boat to finish off their limit and where able to upgrade 4 more quality fish over the next hour giving them 5 fish limit weighing 19.17lbs good for a day one finish of 9th place. Day two found the pair starting on the point in the river again but this time with 10 other boats. Giving that the other boats where only catching small keepers and non keepers the pair gave the point about an hour and a half and left with 2 good keepers and 2 smaller keepers. Arriving at their rock pile on the lake again with hopes of day ones success they only managed 3 small keeper smallmouth. This would help fill there limit but wasn't enough for a good finish. The pair decided to start checking other rock piles that held fish in practice and where able to catch one quality fish at each one helping them increase there bag for a day two total of 19.95lbs. This would give the Brown's a two day total of 39.12lbs and a 4th place finish and qualifies them for the Fishers of Men National Championship to be held on the Red River in Shreveport, LA, in March of 2009. Brian and Mary caught their fish on Outkast Tackle tubes and drop shotting gobie style baits with 8lb GAMMA fluorocarbon line.
